Today, we are travelling to the south of France, to the Occitanie region, to discover the famous medieval fortress of Carcassonne. And the first impression is truly unforgettable. It feels as though you have stepped onto the set of a historical movie. But the most amazing part is that this fortress is completely real, and its history stretches back many centuries.
As you approach the historic centre, the first thing that catches your eye is the enormous stone walls and the countless towers. Inside the fortress, there is a charming medieval atmosphere: stone houses, narrow streets, cosy restaurants, souvenir shops, and beautiful old squares.
One of the most impressive places here is the Château Comtal, or Count’s Castle. Located inside the fortress, it once played an important role in the city’s defence. And if you walk along the ancient ramparts, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Carcassonne and the surrounding countryside.
But Carcassonne is much more than just a castle. The city is also home to the Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus, a stunning Gothic church famous for its magnificent stained-glass windows. When sunlight shines through the colourful glass, the interior becomes incredibly beautiful and atmospheric.
What makes Carcassonne even more fascinating is its ancient history. The story of this place began long before the Middle Ages. A settlement existed on the hill as early as the pre-Roman period, and the Romans later strengthened the city. The fortress gradually developed into the impressive medieval stronghold we see today, with much of its medieval appearance taking shape in the 13th century.
