Today, we are heading to Pointe-Noire, one of the most fascinating cities in the Republic of the Congo, located right on the Atlantic coast. It is a place where the sea breeze, the sound of waves, modern city life, and history come together in one unique setting.
A city by the ocean. Pointe-Noire is located in the southwest of the Republic of the Congo and is considered the country’s main seaport. There is always a sense of movement here: ships arrive at the port, businesses operate, and trade and commercial activity continue to grow. The city is one of the country’s most important economic centers, and its location on the Atlantic coast has made it a true gateway from the Congo to the rest of the world.
A history that began in the 19th century. Pointe-Noire was founded in 1883, although the city began to develop rapidly much later. The construction of a railway connecting the coast with Brazzaville played a major role. Built between 1924 and 1934, the Congo–Ocean Railway became one of the key factors that transformed Pointe-Noire into an important commercial and transportation center.
The city that was once a capital. Here is an interesting historical fact: from 1950 to 1958, Pointe-Noire served as the capital of what was then known as Middle Congo. Today, Brazzaville is the capital of the Republic of the Congo, but Pointe-Noire has retained enormous economic importance.
The port and the railway. Imagine the journey of goods: they arrive by sea in Pointe-Noire and are then transported inland by railway toward Brazzaville. This strategic location helped the city become the country’s main transportation hub. The railway connecting the two largest cities in the Congo is about 534 kilometers long.
Oil and the economy. The oil industry plays a major role in the modern life of the city. Oil is also extracted from offshore fields near Pointe-Noire, making the city an important center for related industrial and business activities. The development of the oil sector during the second half of the 20th century further strengthened Pointe-Noire’s economic importance.
Beaches and an ocean atmosphere. But Pointe-Noire is not only about ports, factories, and business districts. The city is also known for its beaches and opportunities for sport fishing. Here, you can experience a completely different atmosphere: sand beneath your feet, the Atlantic stretching before you, palm trees, and a warm sea breeze.
A unique atmosphere. As you walk through Pointe-Noire, you can easily notice the contrast between the modern city and nature. Busy streets, restaurants, shops, industrial areas, and the endless ocean all exist side by side. This combination is what makes the city so unique and memorable.
